Engel sets up new plant/subsidiary in China; to compete with Asian suppliers

Austrian injection moulding machine maker Engel has established a 100%-owned subsidiary, Wintec Engel Machinery, in China that will start producing injection moulding machines this summer. The firm has set up a new production plant in Changzhou, located in the industrial region Jiangsu. The core target market is China, as well as processors in Southeast Asia, South Korea, Taiwan, and India.

"Our goal for Wintec is to appeal to processors looking for relatively standardised machines with a limited range of options,” says Peter Neumann, CEO of Engel Holding, which is headquartered in Schwertberg/Austria. "This strategic decision allows us to open up a new target group for ENGEL and strengthen our foothold in Asia at the same time.”

The demand for integrated and automated system solutions is constantly increasing. Wintec, however, is positioning itself in the large commodity applications segment. "The requirements of Asian commodity manufacturers for energy efficiency, precision as well as supplier services have increased sharply over the past years. Local suppliers, however, do not sufficiently meet these requirements", stresses Wintec CEO, Peter Auinger, who has moved from Mexico to China to head the new company.

Also, Wintec machines will be different to Engel's with Wintec offering reduced modularity and a smaller range of options. Therefore, Wintec will be able to offer more competitive prices and with short delivery times, says the firm.

"There is hardly any overlap with the series of Engel,” emphasises Auinger. "Until now, commodity manufacturers in Asia have mainly used injection moulding machines from Taiwanese, South Korean, and Chinese suppliers. With Wintec we are developing new target markets.”

Wintec is also establishing a completely independent sales and service structure in China.

In Asia, Engel has had facilities for more than 13 years with a production plant for large-scale machines from 500-5,000 tonnes clamping force in Shanghai, China, and another plant in Pyungtaek-City, South Korea, for small to medium-sized machines up to 500-tonne clamping force.
