Production of preforms on cube moulds; a first in industry


German mould maker Foboha says it has constructed a cube mould for the production of preforms using MuCell technology, which it claims is a first in the industry. The foamed core component generates a metallic effect after blow moulding the preform into a bottle, without the need for added metallic pigments, which is a plus point for recycling as there are no actual pigments. This new oPTI process has been developed by US-based Plastics Technology (PTI). Working with Foboha and Ferromatik Milacron, PTI will now intensify the international marketing of this system.

The two-component injection moulding machine consists of an horizontal injection unit equipped with US company Trexel’s MuCell system. This injection unit blends a gas-nitrogen mixture with the melt. The gas expands in the mould and generates a foam. After a 90 degree turn of the cube, the inner foam is sheathed with a second injection unit. At the later injection blow moulding stage, the thread is also made from this compact outer skin.

Coupling with Foboha’s cube mould technology results in an increased number of cavities in the mould, thereby increasing the output. Shot weight of the PET preforms is 124 g for four preforms; cycle time is 25 seconds.


With a subsequent process, the preform is injection blow moulded into a bottle with striking visual attributes. After the blow moulding process, the foam creates a metallic effect without actually adding metallic pigments. This means, for example, that silver coloured bottles can be recycled normally because the material is nothing but PET.

Due to its significant reduction of cycle times, the cube system has especially established and approved itself for production of mass parts but also for technical parts with additionally integrated assembly processes like in-mould assembly. Using cube technology, the clamping force of injection moulding machine can be halved compared to conventional technologies.
