Motherson invests in plants in the US and China

India-based Samvardhana Motherson Group (SMG) has inaugurated a US$40-million automotive mirror plant in Marysville, Ohio, as part of its greenfield expansion plan for China and the US. The plant will operate under group company Samvardhana Motherson Reflect (SMR), which is one of the largest manufacturers of external rear view mirrors for passenger cars in the world.

SMR develops, produces and distributes exterior mirrors, interior mirrors, blind-spot detection systems and a wide range of other automotive components. SMR claims a global market share of 22%. Over 80% of the auto component maker's revenue comes from overseas markets SMG, which has made a string of acquisitions in the past, is now looking at setting up plants in the US, according to its Chairman VC Sehgal.

SMG is also setting up a plant in Chongqing, China for manufacturing exterior mirrors. It is expected to be operational in a few months. Plans are to set up another plant under the Samvardhana Motherson Peguform (SMP) company in Beijing to produce door panels. The plant is expected to be operational by 2017.
