Automotive parts giant Magna International, which is headquartered in Canada, says it is growing its footprint in China with the establishment of a new seating engineering centre in the Xuhui district of Shanghai. The newly established centre will help Magna match the pace of growth in the world's largest automotive market. The new location, which will include a seating testing lab and prototype shop, will employ approximately 60 people initially, but is expected to increase employment to more than 100 when it operates at full capacity.

"Opening a technical centre in China is a reinforcement of our commitment to our customers, as they are looking for innovation and technology breakthroughs in the local market," said Mike Bisson, President of Magna Seating. "This centre will help us stay in tune with local industry expectations and trends, so that we can continue to deliver the most innovative seating solutions to the market."

In December, Magna also started production at two new manufacturing facilities in the Sanand region of the state of Gujarat, India. Both plants are located within a supplier park adjacent to the Ford Motor Co. assembly plant.

At one of the new Sanand facilities, Magna assembles and provides just-in-time delivery of complete seat systems for Ford. The 215,000-sq ft plant is expected to employ approximately 200 people at full production to produce approximately 240,000 complete seat systems per year.

At Magna’s second new facility in Sanand, the company manufactures body and chassis systems for Ford. The 356,000-sq ft plant is expected to employ approximately 400 people at full production.

While the new plants reflect business awards for vehicles that are built from global-platform architectures, they also help position Magna for further growth in India as vehicle production expands, says the company. Magna’s current presence in India includes approximately 1,600 employees. Including the two new Sanand facilities, Magna has 11 manufacturing locations and three engineering centres.

Magna has 305 manufacturing operations and 95 product development, engineering and sales centres in 29 countries with around 139,000 employees. Its product capabilities include producing body, chassis, exterior, seating, powertrain, electronic, vision, closure and roof systems and modules, as well as complete vehicle engineering and contract.
