Toray to boost CFRP manufacture in Thailand

Through its acquisition of Dome Carbon Magic (DCM), a Japanese producer of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic (CFRP) parts for racing cars, from Dome, Japanese firm Toray Industries will also acquire a 75% stake in Dome Composites Thailand (DCT), a joint venture with the Saha Group, which manufactures products using autoclaving.

The 65-staffed DCM has been producing a number of CFRP parts for the automotive industry and other applications. Toray will rename the company Toray Carbon Magic and also rename the Thai subsidiary, Carbon Magic Thailand. Toray is currently developing products and design and manufacturing technologies for carbon fibre composite materials at its Nagoya plant in Japan.

The firm has continuously been making investments to increase its stake in CFRP and in 2008, it took up equity in Germany-based ACE Advanced Composite Engineering, a manufacturer of CFRP parts using resin transfer moulding (RTM). It also entered into a joint venture with car maker Daimler to set up the Euro Advanced Carbon Fibre Composites in Germany for manufacturing CFRP parts.
