Kiefel delivers machines for new Mercedes C-Class

German machine manufacturer Kiefel has completed the delivery of its order of machines and tools designed to produce doors for the new Mercedes C-Class., which will be available from 2014.

Car maker Mercedes-Benz and Tier 1 supplier, JCI, will be utilising Kiefel’s technology in foil-laminate finishing, and also for the subsequent procedures of edge-folding and hot-riveting.

The laminating procedure is furrther enhanced to include an in-mould graining process, in order to obtain an aesthetically high standard of surface-grain finish.

“Mercedes, working in cooperation with its Tier 1 supplier JCI, is thus the latest major car manufacturer to opt, in the last few months, for our high-tech approach to – and valuable experience in – the production of interior-trim components,” said Thomas J. Halletz, Kiefel’s CEO, on this order worth several million euros, and adding that Mercedes-Benz is building the new C-Class in the US, South Africa, China and the Czech Republic.

Kiefel has already proven its competence in this area over the past year, with the delivery to BMW’s works in China, Germany and South Africa, as part of the BMW 3 Series Project, of plant equipment designed for the production of door-trim elements.
