Amcor buys preform business in the US

Amcor Rigid Plastics USA has purchased the manufacturing assets and intellectual property of Eco-Groupe, a privately held preform manufacturing operation in the US, for US$55 million. The company, which services Amcor as well as other customers in the beverage, food and household sectors, operates four manufacturing sites in the US and has revenue of around US$110 million. Amcor Rigid Plastics has also purchased a minority equity interest in Encon, a woman-owned business enterprise affiliate of Eco-Groupe.

On Encon’s website it is stated that the firm was founded in 1973 by William R. Gaiser, Encon, who is credited for building the prototype injection mould and became the first to successfully mould PET preforms for the two-stage, bottle-making process-injection moulding a preform which is then stretch blow moulded to form a container. The company also prides itself on being a “woman-owned workplace”, which is a rarity in the plastics moulding sector.

“This acquisition will continue our growth strategy and commitment to the packaging industry,” said Mike Schmitt, Amcor Rigid Plastics President. “Eco-Groupe’s technologies will strengthen our innovation focus and expand our offerings to customers.”

Eco-Groupe’s technology portfolio includes a modular moulding system called Viper, which allows for multiple size preforms to be injected simultaneously, and Eco-Pod, a mobile manufacturing system.

Amcor CEO/Managing Director, Ron Delia said: "This acquisition provides an excellent opportunity to acquire a well capitalised business at an attractive price. Given the manufacturing overlap, the acquisition will deliver considerable operating synergies and generate strong returns for shareholders."

Amcor Rigid Plastics is among the world’s largest manufacturers of rigid plastic packaging for the food, beverage, spirits, personal care, home care and healthcare industries with 58 facilities in 12 countries. Based in Ann Arbor, Mich., Amcor Rigid Plastics is a subsidiary of Australia-headquartered Amcor Limited.

This purchase follows several acquisitions that Amcor has made over the past year in Brazil (Souza Cruzs internal tobacco packaging operations), South Africa (Nampak Flexibles), China (Zhongshan Tiancai Packaging Company) and India (Packaging India Private Limited).
